Though the Blackhawks had a rough time when they got started, things continued to get worse in the 20 years that James E. Norris and Bill Tobin took over the team. Norris owned the Red Wings team, and they were true rivals of the Blackhawks. It made the Blackhawks deem useless in the NHL, and they barely made the playoffs twice during this time. After James Norris died, his son James D. Norris and Arthur Wirtz took over the team. They wanted to start up this hockey team again, and started by getting star players Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Pierre Pilote, Glenn Hall, and Ted Lindsay. Hull, Mikita, PIlote and Hall all were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After 20 years of hardships for the Blackhawks, times were getting better. By 1961, they had won three Stanley Cup Championships and went on to go to the Cup Finals twice more. The Hawks were still struggling, but their team was finally coming together.
Finally, in the 1966 to 1967 season, the last season of the six-team NHL, the Blackhawks finished first. The curse that was originally put on the team was finally broken even though they did not win the Stanley Cup that year.In the 1970 to 1971 year, Chicago hockey was becoming a sport that was easier to cheer for. More teams were placed in the East Division, and the Hawks went to the West Division. Their final score was 46-17-15, and they finished first place. Over the next 13 years, the Hawks were doing okay but still did not get the recognition they do today until 1983 when Bill Wirtz took over the team. When the 1985 playoffs came, fans started a tradition of applauding and cheering during the singing of “The Star Spangled Banner”. More changes were starting to happen with Wirtz in the lead, and in the 1988 to 1989 season, the “Black Hawks” officially became the “Chicago Blackhawks”. Up until 2009 and 2010 season, the Blackhawks continued on their regular route.
They had a few good years and quite a few more bad years, but changes were starting to be made. Some called the Blackhawks one of the worst teams in NHL history, but this did not discourage the team. Many players were recognized and awarded for being outstanding hockey players, but the Blackhawks did not win the Stanley Cup again until the 2009 to 2010 season. By the 2012 to 2013 year, they went on to win the Stanley Cup again and the President’s Trophy. They finally built up a huge fan base, and the Chicago Blackhawks are now a very well-known and successful team. This past year, the Hawks have won their sixth Stanley Cup, making it their third Stanley cup in the past six seasons. The Chicago Blackhawks are a tough NHL hockey team, and even though they have been through some rough years in the NHL they have not stopped fighting. The current coach for the NHL team is Joel Quenneville, and he has positive notes about all of his players, including Corey Crawford and Brent Seabrook. Quenneville also has high hopes for the Blackhawks in years to come.
